Creating a Work-Life Balance

By Ashley Paskill on September 23, 2018

Now more than ever, young people are pushing themselves harder at work. They are taking on more hours and more responsibility to make ends meet. However, this makes them more likely to sacrifice having a personal life to advance in their professional lives. This leads to having a decrease in a work-life balance. There are steps to ensure that you have a healthy work-life balance and can separate the two.

1. Set boundaries

Setting boundaries is a key to creating a work-life balance. If you are scheduled to work from 9-5, stop checking your work emails once you are off the clock. Tell your boss or supervisor that you are unavailable on days off or after hours unless an emergency occurs. Boundaries allow you to leave your work at work so you can live life on your terms. Do not be afraid to say no to tasks when you are already booked to the max.

2. If possible, avoid doing remote work at home

If your job allows for remote work, avoid working from home unless you are sick, need to be home with kids or family, or the roads are icy due to weather conditions. Working at home makes your house feel like work, which breaks the boundary of bringing your work home with you. Find a local coffee shop or shared workspace if possible and get work done there. You may even find that you are more productive outside of your house.

3. Take time to take care of yourself

Young people are less likely to take lunch breaks and tend to eat lunch while working. However, taking breaks throughout the workday is crucial to staying mentally healthy. Avoid eating lunch at your desk and take breaks throughout the day. Go somewhere else for lunch, whether you eat your packed lunch outside or going out for lunch. Allow yourself to breathe and practice destressing when things get tense. You will work better when you let yourself take care of you.

4. Use time-off benefits

Using time-off is crucial for mental health. Everyone needs days away from work to get other tasks done and to step away from stress. Even if you do not plan to go anywhere for vacation, it is important to take time off for resting and relaxing. Many times, these benefits are paid, so there is no worry about missing out on money. Plan some fun with friends and family or just take some time to pamper yourself. Not only will this give you a chance to relax, but it will also give you something to give yourself something to look forward to.
